My English Garden - what it looks like through the seasons - what the plants are and how I look after them.
My garden is in a lovely little corner of North West England near the coast and is in zone 8b/9a
In spite of being fairly northerly, I benefit from a temperate climate due to the SW ocean winds and warming Gulf stream.
The garden rests on a bedrock of sandstone with about 2 feet of sandy soil.
I am interested in shrubs, flowers and trees and the wildlife that shares the garden with me. It is a constant fascination to me how nature all fits together
Looking forward to meeting you in the comments.

Great video, Paul. What do you think would happen if you took a cutting and did not put it in water, but rather put it in a cool dark place and then tried to root it in early spring?
Thank you Martial, I think it might work - would need to not dry out. I think it would be convenient to do that...I think you'll have to try it and see. I wonder if putting it in a pot of very slightly moist soil would be better. Not trying to root it but keep it a bit moist?
Thank you 😊 🙏

Do not mention slugs this year. You will break shelter-spell.🤣🤣🤣
I know! I have already talked about slugs too much this year 😀
I love your maple and Margery Fish, most famous owner of East Lambrook Manor, did as well. She mentioned, that she only bought the house because of such a tree in the garden. You knew it already I guess. It is such a cheerful plant.
It is indeed - I really like maple trees.
Lovely garden tour, Paul. You sure grow shrubs and trees to perfection.
Very nice of you Rachel, I do like my shrubs 👍

Well Iliana, you got me there! 👍
Thank you for the beautiful tour! I can't believe your sunrise is SO EARLY!! Ours is currently 5:30 AM, which is early enough, but wow! The Philadelphus I planted (because of your videos) has yet to flower, but it has only been a year/year and a half. I'm hopeful for this summer.
That’s great… you’ve got a philadelphus - they’re quite reliable, so it’ll perform for you once it gets going and then every year after. Those sunrises are great - pity I miss them each morning 💤
Good hedges do make good neighbours but our neighbour keeps putting weed killer down close to our hedge. The hedge is a mixture of lots of different species but it is hard to keep it healthy because of the weed killer
I sympathise - very frustrating. I grew cuttings for an area alongside the road. They all died - I asked a neighbour about it and she said she’d used weed killer but it was Ok as it was a selective weed killer 🤦♂️🤣….yeah, it selected my cuttings!
What a lovely place to wander Paul, and to doze under a tree.( It's still too cold to linger, here, but there are few biting bugs.) Watch that ivy, it's a real pest,; a Rose of Sharon appeared here - birds? Thanks for a really great video.
I suppose it could be birds but I’m suspicious as there had been lots there a while back. Hope it’s warmed up wheee you are Wendy, I’m in York today and it’s 25C. Glad you liked the video!
This is such a wonderful video Paul. How fortunate you are to have these gorgeous, storybook animals in England. Did you grow your Brugmansia from seed? I live in Australia, but was born in England so I feel naturally drawn to cute English animals and gorgeous gardens, like yours.
I grew the brugmansia from cuttings - so easy to do. I have a video on how I do it. So nice you enjoy English wildlife - I love it that they visit my little patch in England. 🌸 How to Over-Winter Brugmansia - Angel's Trumpet ruclips.net/video/6hm0f5m_bqA/видео.html

Hello greetings Paul from Cambodia, this is beautiful sharing thank you
Hello and welcome - greetings from England. 🌻
Why not lengthen the square the tree in the lawn's growing in and make it into another flower bed? Then you can transplant the large Hydrangea and other plants that aren't working elsewhere. Just a thought.
That’s a nice thought and would look great. Unfortunately that area is even drier. The garden is on sandstone so water soaks straight through. I do like the idea of though! 👍
I love your garden so much Paul. It is truly exquisite. I am trying to create a privacy border too, but on one fence my husband and I are trying to get rid of our bamboo! Thank you for sharing it.
Such a shame bamboo can end up a problem because it makes a great privacy screen.
Hi Paul!! Anna from Richmond, VA USA. Your gardens are gorgeous as always! Thank you for the beauty! My Dahlias are all doing so well...if you remember when we were wondering about our friend George from The Small Garden Channel. I planted many dahlias and call them all "George's Dahlias" ❤ Hostas are wonderful and you have beautiful hostas!!!! I have a lot too! Love the variegated ones and the lime toned hostas. At night they just glow. I have many hydrangeas too. Love Campanula!!!Happy Summertime Paul!
Hello Anna, glad your dahlias are doing well - mine a bit slug-bitten. So nice of you to remember George with his own dahlia patch. I am really starting to appreciate hostas and just love them in the patio. Enjoy your Summer gardening!
Greetings Paul from the US. I wish we had the problem UK is having being cool. We in most of the US are in heat wave. Here in Kentucky, it has not rained in a month. It's been around 90-95 degrees with high humidity every day for the past two weeks. Needless to say, our lawns are starting to brown, and my garden is not looking its best right now. My garden tasks lately are just watering every morning. Your garden is so beautiful and looks so peaceful and tranquil in the evening light. Thank you for the tour of your garden. Happy growing, James
Yes...we are sweltering here in VA too...summer has arrived!! 😊
James, we’ve been hearing about the US heatwave - watering is so time-consuming and I’m on a water meter so pay for every drop. Hope you get a good downpour soon. Glad you enjoyed the evening tour
@@paultsworld Yes, I'm not looking forward to seeing my water and electric bill next month. My A/C is running nonstop for the past two weeks. It does not even cool down at night sadly.
Not many private homes have a/c over here - in fact I don’t know anyone who does - only need it two days a year!
@@paultsworld Sounds like paradise. I have to run my A/C usually from April through October here. If I go outside right now, it's like stepping into a sauna at 6:30 in the evening. The humidity is 80% today. Summers are usually not this extreme in Kentucky. I just hope this unusual spell ends soon. Take care Paul.
Le jardin est très beau 👍
Merci Roger.
Don’t mention the autumn word, we’ve only just reached 20 degrees here in Durham uk 😅 Great tour thank you 🌺🌿

Hi Paul, as always you're garden is a pleasure. I can see you put a lot of work into it. Michael in the West of Ireland 🇮🇪
Hi Michael, thank you - I do enjoy working in the garden but I have good breaks at times. Greetings from England.
Bună ziua mia placut tare mult bravo chisinău
Thank you Nina - greetings to Chisinau. multumesc Nina - salutari la Chisinau
Great garden tour Paul. The hydrangea cuttings I took after watching one of your videos have taken really well. I’ve got 5 new ones now. I’ve repotted them into bigger pots and one has got little flower buds on. Should I cut these off at this stage and when would you suggest I put them in the ground? Thanks
That is great - isn’t it satisfying getting new plants like that! I think you could cut off the new bud although in the long run it probably doesn’t matter. If they have good roots filling the new pot then yes, you could put them in the ground - make sure they don’t go dry over the Summer. 👍
Thank you for the tour, Paul. Your garden looks great and I do like the way you talk to the camera and guide us around it. Here, in central Europe, we have had a heatwave this week, with occasional storms. Another thunderstorm is on its way. Due to the weather (and the fertiliser) my garden has changed into a jungle!
I do like the jungle ‘look’ Jolanta although it can take a bit more managing. It’s probably very humid as well so your plants are loving it! I’m pleased you like the video style - I talk slowly to give me time to remember the names of the plants 😆
@@paultsworld Yes, my plants do love the humidity and so does rose black spot ;-)
One of my roses has black spot this year ☹️

Beautiful plants like that maple, can I grow here in Edmonton Alberta? Thanks
Hi Annette, great to hear from Edmonton! Not sure about the maple - I’m zone 9a and have just googled the drommondii maple. It says hardy in mild parts of Uk. So that sounds as though it wouldn’t survive your zone as most of England is zone 8.
Thank you for yet another wonderful tour of your lovely gardens. You continue to be such an inspiration.
How lovely to hear from you Colleen. Hope your garden is blooming beautifully for you. 🌸
Hi Paul, we could have used a bit of your chilly weather. We just had a few days of 95F 🥵It was awful. Your gardens are glorious as always. I always enjoy the tour. :) Have a great weekend 🌻🌺🌸🌹🌷
Hello Sue, as I’ve got older I ‘need’ less heat and now enjoy and appreciate our very mild climate. Hope your 95f gets blown away soon. Glad you liked the tour 🌸
Keep the white hydrangeas!!!❤
😁 it’s beautiful isn’t it! I just can’t keep up with watering it in the Summer - but we’ll see. Maybe I could put it in a pot which is easier to water?
Good Morning Paul, Ahhhh that was a relaxing garden tour, thanks for taking us along, especially those of us whose gardens are dormant right now. Your garden is delightful. Ooooooo I loved the golden brunneria, I didn't know about those! I want one! I can obtain Jack Frost here and I need more in my woodland garden. You should replay the section where you are going to "TIDY UP" the philadelphus in the front, you sound like a mafia boss. RUN philly RUN ! I hate vinca, previous people planted it and we have been battling it for 9 years. We had a major assault on it earlier in the year, a solid day of digging, and it's back. Be careful encouraging the campanula, ours went like the vinca. Don't move it anywhere else. Don't be conned by the pretty purple flowers!!
Good evening Margaret, interesting what you say about campanulas - mine are really well behaved - maybe they find my soil difficult. However I’ll keep an eye on them in case they turn on me and join forces with the vinca tribe. Yes, get some brunnera - also easy to split and sometimes self seed. Generally left alone by the slugs - except this year 🐌. I was going to replay the Philly massacre but my editing time was short. It would be flowering better but a deutzia has claimed the airspace so the trimmers are coming out again 😂 - in favour of Philly - she deserves it. 🌸
you must have had above average rainfall or you are warmer to have so many slugs this year. Oh I see! The deutzia is going to cop it 😮😄 Oh no I can't watch! It was a magnificent specimen, it's smile lit up the room...RIP.
I’ll be moderate in my pruning from now on - no, honestly!
😄
Your garden looks absolutely beautiful paul. We have good weather at last. Makes gardening easier. Iv bought a cornus. China girl. So am looking forward to seeing that grow. God bless 🇮🇪
Thank you Catherine. 🌻 China Girl is a beauty - nice choice! Greetings from 🏴
Hello Paul, your garden is exquisite! You may be as far north as Edmonton, but you're certainly not as cold.
Glad you like the garden Mrs Rover 👍 Luckily we have a maritime climate rather than Edmonton’s continental climate - we bless the waves that lap our shores.
Good hedges make for good neighbours! As does a court injunction!!! I jest…if only I *could* get one for mine…🤣🤣👍🏻
Yeah, injunctions can be quicker to grow - less watering but strangle faster than bindweed. 😆
@@paultsworld one of my neighbours really is a lunatic! Perhaps I could just get her sectioned…🤣Apart from the clinical insanity, she turned her charming old water mill home into what now looks like a branch of B&Q warehouse…concrete extensions, ripped the water wheel off, concreted most of the garden over…I always say that if I win Lotto, the next time she goes on holiday, I’m going to pay a company to mount a massive orange “B&Q” onto the side of her house for a laugh!! 🤣👌🏻 Now *that* would be worth videoing for RUclips!👍🏻
Wow and wow again, set up your trail camera!
@@paultsworld I get paid (oddly) over the weekend…I’ll be ordering it thereafter!!!
I’m as excited about it as you are 😀
Happy Summer Solstice!!! 🌞🌻 Your garden is really shaping up for Summer! Didn’t recognise that white hydrangea!! What a transformation!! 😮 You’re so great with cuttings, they all seem to turn into amazing whopping specimens in no time…are you actually a wizard?? 🧙🏻♂️ I’ve suddenly got (in the last 2 years) wild rambling (briar?) roses scrambling through several shrubs and going up an ash tree. They’re a delight. I like the idea of scrambling things through things. I’ve no room for clematis unless I do this scrambling - through - something - else thing. I’m going to try it. I planted some vinca major years ago, it’s gone nuts, it pops up everywhere, strangling adjacent plants, it’s like the neighbour FROM HELL!! 😱🤦🏻♀️
What a day - 21st June! The cuttings that work seem to do well but lots are left on the cutting room floor 😆 Excellent- get those scrambly things scrambling!
Hi Paul, I love the Drummondii Maple, not come across that before. Too large for my small garden thought. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the Hydrangeas in flower. I love the honey colored Heucheras too. 😊😊😊
Hi Pauline, it’s easy to keep deciduous trees clipped back. I grew an oak tree in my back garden from an acorn. 😆 I’m going to keep it manageable. Hydrangeas will look good - watch this space!🌻
I wish I could drop by for a cup of tea and some scones. 😂Your garden is stunning!
Tea and scones on the lawn - lovely Summer pastime 🌻
